FAQ
What type of truck do I learn to drive at these schools?
They go by many different names: eighteen wheelers, semi trucks, tractor trailers. In the US, these trucks are built by Mack, Peterbilt, Freightliner, Volvo, Kenworth, and a few other companies.
Am I required to take a test to qualify for a CDL?
Yes. The school you attend will prepare you for the test that is required to obtain a CDL. The test varies from state to state and is taken at your local DMV. Practice tests are available online to also help you prepare for most CDL tests. Many truck driving schools give a "don't pass, don't pay" guarantee to ensure you are able to obtain a CDL.
I need a job now. Does the training take a long time?
The time it takes to complete training depends on the program you attend. Your program may take a few weeks, or several months. Some programs offer accelerated training programs. Whatever your needs are, we can help you find a school that will meet them.
Is it easy to find a job in the trucking industry?
Like most other jobs, it depends on the economy of the region you are in. However, there is currently a high demand for truck drivers in the southeast and throughout the rest of the United States. Many southeast truck driving schools will help you find your first job.
How much can I earn as a truck driver?
Most drivers make at least $35,000 their first year. Pay increases as the driver's experience does. Successful drivers can make well over $100,000 in a year, especially owner operators.
I am interested in the trucking industry, but I don't have any experience. Will I learn everything I need to know to begin a career in the trucking industry in a truck driving school?
The amount you learn depends on the program. We work only with accredited truck driving schools that will provide all the information and training you need to know to obtain a CDL.
Do all programs include behind-the-wheel training?
Not all programs include behind the wheel training. Some only include in-class instruction, while others offer several hours behind the wheel. We would recommend choosing a program that can offer both types of training.
How big is a tractor trailer?
A typical tractor trailer is 80 feet long, but some are longer. A special license allows you to pull more than one trailer at a time.
Are there any requirements for attending a truck driving school?
Yes. While requirements vary from state to state, at a minimum, you must meet federal requirements set by the Department of Transportation. These include (but are not limited to) having a valid driver's license, be at least 21 years old, and be able to pass a drug test and a physical exam.
Furthermore, most individual trucking companies will have their own set of requirements you must fulfill.
